This rug is of an incredible original design, made by Ms. Rhea Wilhelmine Young, of Stevensville, Ontario in the Niagara peninsula about 1920. Ms. Young was reportedly in her early 20's at the time of it's creation. It is definitely strongly influenced by the deco fashion of the times, but the "cosmic" imagery of moons, lightning bolts, stars and flowers, along with her Alsatian heritage suggest that as some have inferred, she may have been a descendant of the Zoarite sect which settled in Ohio in the early 1813, and spread from there when they dissolved in 1898. The Zoarites used similar imagery in their fabrics, pottery, and furniture decoration, but further study would be necessary to determine if there was a connection. The rug is in excellent condition. It has faded slightly from it's original colours as is evident when you flip it over and look at the back, but it is still a rare and beautiful object. It is quite large at 36" x 68".
